According to ITIL 4, a configuration management database (CMDB) “is used to store configuration records throughout their lifecycle and maintain the relationships between [them].” In other words, your CMDB stores information on the configuration of items within an organization, including hardware, software, systems, facilities, and sometimes personnel. Despite the obvious advantages of CMDB, many organizations fail to generate value from their CMDB solutions and these are just a few of the reasons: manual processes used to build the CMDB, lack of people and process in place to identify the critical data that should be moved into the CMDB or the automated tools to ensure the data is put in the right place in the CMDB. Manual inventories and audits are also used by certain businesses to update their CMDB data. Because of the volume of data present and the format in which it is kept, it is uncommon for users to obtain configuration data directly from the CMDB.
